Why It’s Time to Stop Waiting for the ‘Perfect’ Moment to Start Your Email Marketing

Look, I’m not going to give you the whole “you need to start emailing now because at least it’s a platform you OWN and you don’t have to worry about algorithms messing up your read” spiel (because I’m SURE you’ve heard that more than once already).

You KNOW that already. That’s not the issue. What IS the issue, is that we’ve all had those moments as busy business owners where we get in our heads a lil bit and start overthinking.

“It’s been three months since I last emailed them, I don’t wanna annoy them!”

“I don’t have anything exciting to share with them!”

“I need to finish XYZ (your branding, your strategy, whatever it is that’s stopping you) first!”

I totally get it, because I’ve been there myself before too. Thinking that everything needs to be perfectly aligned before hitting “send” on an email. 

But you know what?

Perfection Is Overrated.

There, I said it!

It’s easy to think that your email list isn’t big enough or that your content isn’t good enough to send out. 

You don’t want to bother your subscribers. So instead of putting something that might be a lil messy out there, you just keep waiting… and waiting… and waiting for that “perfect” email idea to strike or the “perfect” timing to send your message.

But let’s be honest: there’s no such thing as the perfect email or the perfect timing.

What matters most is showing up consistently for your audience, even if your emails are a little rough around the edges. Because at the end of the day? Waiting for the “perfect” moment holds you back more than you realize. 

Once you let go of the idea that every email needs to be perfect, the next challenge is actually getting started.

Because overthinking leads to over-planning, and over-planning leads to doing… absolutely nothing.

Action Leads to Momentum

The hardest part of any task is getting started on the task itself. You can spend three hours planning and strategizing and researching until your eyes get sore from looking at the screen.

And it FEELS productive, right? “Look how much time, thought, and intention I put into this! But now my creative juices are worn out, so I’ll just write the actual email tomorrow”

Until tomorrow turns into the next day, which turns into next week, and suddenly it’s been over a month since you planned everything and you still never sent out that email.

Sound familiar? Because I know it does for me! I’ve done this more times than I’d like to count when it comes to ALL my content planning. The planning part is SO MUCH FUN.

But the thing is, that perfectionist in us, is the thing that’s keeping us feeling stuck. Because once you take that first step of sending that email you’ve been putting off, you’ll find that momentum builds. 

Your emails don’t have to be flawless. They just need to be sent. Every email you write makes the next one easier, and before you know it, you’ve established a consistent schedule that feels good!

Learning Through Action

Nelson Mandela once said, “I never fail. I either win or learn.”

This mindset is especially relevant in email marketing because every email gives you data, whether it’s a win or a learning experience. That’s why the best marketers don’t overthink—they test, tweak, and keep going.

Once you start emailing, the real beauty happens: you get data. You see what topics your readers love, what makes them click, and what kind of tone keeps them engaged.

Every email gives you feedback, even if that feedback is just radio silence.

You learn what resonates with your audience, what doesn’t, and how to tweak your approach for better results next time. The worst-case scenario? You’ve gained insights that will help you improve! 

The best-case scenario? Your message hit the right person, at the right time, and left them feeling inspired to take the next step. Whatever that might look like for them.

Plus, the more emails you send? The more you figure out what you LIKE sending. You find that sweet spot between your interests and what your audience is interested in. Talk about a win-win!

Stop Waiting and Start Sending

If there’s one thing I want you to remember, it’s this: waiting for everything to be “perfect” is just another form of procrastination. 

The best time to start your email marketing is now. Take messy action, learn from the process, and watch your email marketing efforts grow and evolve over time. 

Progress > Perfection.

It’s easier said than done, but I believe in you! Take 10 minutes to write a stream of conscience style email and just press send. If you need a lil inspiration, here’s one I wrote recently about popping my tire (oops!).
